Let’s talk about how our bodies change over time and why it’s essential to embrace and celebrate those changes. Recently, in one of my Fierce Confidence sessions, we discussed our favorite and least favorite physical features and how those opinions shift over the years. Think about it: is there a part of your body you love now that you didn’t appreciate 10 years ago? Or maybe there’s something you miss? That’s the reality of our bodies—they’re constantly evolving.
Turning 40 has made me even more aware of these changes. I’ve noticed weight that just won’t budge, and I suspect it may be due to perimenopause. At times, it’s frustrating, but does it make me love myself any less? Not at all. Self-love isn’t about meeting certain physical standards; it’s about valuing yourself through all of life’s phases.
Why Embracing Body Changes is Empowering
Owning your worth means owning your age and embracing the natural changes your body goes through. Each change tells a story—it’s a testament to the life you’re living. Appreciating your body for all it does, at every stage, is incredibly powerful. It allows us to see our bodies beyond fleeting beauty standards and instead focus on our unique journey.
Reconnecting with Your Body: The Power of a Body Scan
If you’re feeling disconnected from your body, try a practice called a “body scan.” Stand in front of a mirror, wearing as much (or as little) as feels comfortable. Take your time looking at each part of your body, from head to toe. Notice your thoughts and feelings without judging them. Each thought is just information, reflecting your relationship with your body.
Write down your thoughts about each feature, and reflect on why you feel the way you do. You may uncover new insights about your relationship with your body—both the things you appreciate and those you may still be working to embrace.
Loving Your Body in a World of Changing Standards
It’s easy to let societal beauty standards influence how we feel about ourselves. But remember, your body is unique, and it deserves to be loved and appreciated at every age and stage. So take time to reconnect, reflect, and find reasons to fall in love with your body all over again.
If you try a body scan, I’d love to hear about your experience. Embracing these practices is a powerful step towards building confidence, self-love, and a stronger connection with your body.
I am grateful for my body and its unique journey through every stage of life.
